MARCH 21: THOMAS CRANMER

Archbishop of Canterbury, Martyr, 1556: Cranmer is author of the Book of Common Prayer, adopted by Parliament as the official liturgy of the Church of England in 1549.
The Fifth Sunday in Lent, commonly called Passion Sunday, falls on March 21 this year, the day the Anglican Church commemorates Cranmer’s death. The Collect for the day:
WE beseech thee, Almighty God, mercifully to look upon thy people; that by thy great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (1928 Book of Common Prayer, page 132.)
German portraitist Gerlach Flicke's best-known painting is possibly that of Thomas Cranmer, dated 1545, which is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
